How Many Papers in UPSC Prelims?

Fact: The Preliminary Examination has two compulsory papers — General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II (CSAT).

Fact: Both papers are of 200 marks each, objective-type with multiple-choice questions and negative marking for wrong answers.

Although there are only two papers, they play a crucial role: GS Paper I determines the cut-off, and CSAT is qualifying. You must clear both conditions to move to the Main Examination stage.

How Many Papers in UPSC Mains?

Fact: The Main Examination consists of nine written papers — Paper A (Indian language), Paper B (English), Essay, General Studies I, II, III, IV, and Optional Subject Paper I and II.

Fact: Papers A and B are qualifying language papers; Essay, GS I–IV, and Optional I & II are counted for merit, totalling 1750 marks.

From a preparation angle, this means you are effectively preparing for nine distinct exams, each with its own style and syllabus, even though the same knowledge base often supports more than one paper.

Is the Interview a Paper?

Fact: The Personality Test (Interview) is a separate stage of 275 marks, conducted face-to-face at the UPSC office in New Delhi.

Fact: It is not a written paper; instead, it is an assessment by a board that evaluates your suitability for civil services.

In total, if you count every assessed component, UPSC CSE involves two Prelims papers, nine Mains papers, and one interview stage.

Which Papers Are Counted for Merit and Which Are Qualifying?

Fact: Prelims papers are qualifying — their marks do not enter the final merit calculation, but you must clear GS I cut-off and CSAT qualifying marks.

Fact: In Mains, the two language papers are qualifying; failure in these can disqualify you even if you do well in other papers.

Fact: The seven Mains merit papers (Essay, GS I–IV, Optional I & II) and the Personality Test marks are used to decide the final rank and service allocation.

Knowing which papers are qualifying and which count for merit helps you prioritise time and effort appropriately while still respecting the importance of each component.
