Overview of the NLU System
The National Law Universities are a network of public law schools established across India to raise the standard of legal education and research. Since the founding of the first NLU, the system has grown to around 24 universities, most of which admit undergraduate and postgraduate students through the Common Law Admission Test conducted by the Consortium of NLUs.
NLUs are widely regarded as the premier destinations for aspiring lawyers in India, offering rigorous five-year integrated degrees, active moot court cultures, strong internship pipelines, and access to leading recruiters. Their reputation has made a seat at a top NLU one of the most coveted outcomes for law aspirants nationwide.
It is important to note that not every prominent law school admits through CLAT. NLU Delhi, for instance, conducts its own entrance examination, AILET, rather than participating in CLAT. Understanding which universities sit within the CLAT system helps aspirants plan their applications accurately.
NLSIU Bengaluru
The National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, is the oldest and most prestigious NLU, frequently regarded as the benchmark for legal education in the country. As the pioneer of the five-year integrated law degree model in India, it set the template that subsequent NLUs followed, and it continues to attract the very top rankers in CLAT.
NLSIU is known for its academically demanding curriculum, distinguished faculty, and vibrant intellectual culture. Its students consistently excel in national and international moot court competitions, and its research output across constitutional law, public policy, and other fields is highly respected. Admission is fiercely competitive, with General category seats typically closing within the first several ranks.
A degree from NLSIU opens doors to the most sought-after opportunities, from top corporate law firms and litigation chambers to judicial clerkships, policy roles, and prestigious postgraduate programmes abroad. For many aspirants, it represents the ultimate goal of their CLAT journey.
NALSAR Hyderabad
NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, stands among the very best NLUs in India and is a perennial first choice alongside NLSIU for high-scoring CLAT candidates. Its strong academic reputation, dynamic faculty, and expansive campus make it a leading centre for legal learning and research.
The university offers a well-rounded legal education with notable strengths across constitutional law, corporate law, and interdisciplinary studies, supported by specialised centres and an active moot court tradition. NALSAR students regularly secure prestigious internships and perform strongly in competitions, reflecting the calibre of both the institution and its cohort.
Placements at NALSAR are excellent, with graduates entering top law firms, litigation, judiciary, policy think tanks, and higher studies. Its consistently high cut-offs underscore its standing as one of the most desirable destinations in the NLU system.
WBNUJS Kolkata & NLU Jodhpur
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, is widely counted among the top NLUs, celebrated for its academic rigour and strong research culture. It attracts excellent students and has a reputation for producing graduates who thrive in litigation, corporate practice, academia, and policy. Its cut-offs place it firmly in the upper tier of the CLAT system.
NLU Jodhpur has carved out a distinctive identity, particularly through its focus on interdisciplinary programmes and specialisations that connect law with management and other fields. It is regarded as a strong, well-established NLU with solid placements and an active campus culture, making it a popular high-preference choice for many aspirants.
Together, WBNUJS and NLU Jodhpur illustrate the depth of quality beyond the very top two NLUs. Both offer rich academic environments and strong career outcomes, and both feature prominently on the preference lists of ambitious candidates.
Other Prominent NLUs
Beyond the leading names, several other NLUs enjoy strong reputations and offer excellent legal education. GNLU Gandhinagar is well regarded for its infrastructure, academic breadth, and growing placement network, while NLIU Bhopal, as one of the earlier NLUs, carries a long-standing reputation and a loyal alumni base across the profession.
These universities, along with others in the system, provide rigorous curricula, active moot and debate cultures, and meaningful internship opportunities. Their cut-offs, while more accessible than the very top NLUs, still reflect healthy competition, and their graduates go on to successful careers across the legal spectrum.
The newer NLUs, established more recently, are steadily building their reputations with modern facilities and ambitious faculty. They expand access to quality legal education and can be excellent choices, particularly for candidates whose ranks place these universities within comfortable reach.
Courses Offered at NLUs
The flagship offering at NLUs is the five-year integrated undergraduate law degree, most commonly the BA LLB (Hons.), along with variants such as BBA LLB and B.Com LLB at universities that offer them. These programmes combine a foundational discipline — arts, business administration, or commerce — with a full law curriculum, producing well-rounded graduates over five years.
At the postgraduate level, NLUs offer the one-year LLM programme, admission to which is through CLAT PG. The LLM allows specialisation in areas such as constitutional law, corporate and commercial law, intellectual property, and international law, catering to those seeking academic, research, or specialised practice careers.
Many NLUs also host doctoral programmes and research centres, alongside diplomas and certificate courses in niche areas. This layered academic structure allows students to progress from an integrated undergraduate degree through to advanced research within the same ecosystem.
Admission Through CLAT
Admission to the vast majority of NLUs is through CLAT, the centralised entrance test conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. The UG paper — 120 MCQs across English, Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques in two hours — determines a common merit list used for centralised counselling and seat allotment.
Candidates rank the universities they wish to attend in a preference list during counselling, and seats are allotted according to rank, category, and stated preferences. Because the process is centralised, a single strong CLAT performance can open the door to any participating NLU within the candidate's reach.
The clear exception is NLU Delhi, which conducts its own examination, AILET, and does not admit through CLAT. Aspirants who wish to study there must apply separately for AILET, while those targeting the other NLUs focus their efforts on CLAT.
Placements and Careers
NLUs are renowned for the breadth of career opportunities they unlock. Top graduates are recruited by leading corporate law firms, both domestic and international, where they work on mergers, capital markets, disputes, and advisory mandates. Litigation, whether independently or in the chambers of senior advocates, remains a respected and popular path.
Beyond private practice, NLU graduates enter the judiciary through judicial services examinations, join policy think tanks and civil society organisations, and pursue careers in the corporate sector as in-house counsel. Many also opt for higher studies at prestigious universities abroad, aided by the strong academic grounding an NLU degree provides.
The combination of rigorous education, professional networks, and recruiter relationships means an NLU degree offers exceptional career mobility. The specific opportunities available often correlate with the university's reputation, which is one reason cut-offs at the top NLUs remain so competitive.
How to Choose the Right NLU
Choosing the right NLU means looking beyond rankings alone. Consider the university's academic strengths and any specialisations that match your interests, its location and the legal ecosystem of the surrounding city, the fee structure and living costs, and the placement record that shapes your career prospects after graduation.
Your own priorities should guide the decision. A candidate set on corporate law might weight recruiter presence heavily, while someone drawn to litigation or judiciary may value a particular city or academic focus. Balancing prestige against practical factors leads to a choice you will be content with across five formative years.
