Result Day Essentials

CLAT UG results are declared by the Consortium of NLUs on the official CLAT website. On result day, log in with your registration credentials to access your score card, which shows your raw score, any negative marking adjustments, your All India Rank, and your category rank if applicable. Save and download multiple copies of this score card immediately.

Result day emotions run high, but the information on your score card is the foundation for every subsequent admission step. Note your exact rank and category rank before comparing with cut-off discussions online. Unverified social media claims about cut-offs on result day are often inaccurate; wait for official counselling data and refer to your own rank against historical closing ranks.

If you face technical issues accessing results, use official helpline channels rather than third-party websites. Keep your registration number, password, and registered email accessible. Result day is also the moment to inform family and mentors of your outcome calmly and begin planning the counselling timeline rather than making impulsive decisions about drop years or alternative exams.

Understanding Your Rank & Score

Your CLAT score reflects performance on 120 MCQs with +1 for correct and -0.25 for incorrect answers in the offline exam. Your All India Rank is your position among all candidates and is what determines seat allotment in counselling, not the raw score alone. Two students with different scores in different years may hold the same rank if paper difficulty varied.

Category rank is equally important for reserved category candidates. Seat allotment in OBC, SC, ST, PwD, and other reserved pools uses category rank against category-specific seats at each NLU. General category candidates compete in the general pool. Ensure you understand which rank applies to your seat pool before researching NLU cut-offs.

Compare your rank against closing ranks from the previous two to three CLAT counselling cycles for NLUs you are interested in. This comparison gives a realistic picture of which institutions are within reach. Remember that NLU Delhi admits through AILET, not CLAT, so it will not appear in CLAT counselling regardless of your CLAT rank.

Counselling Registration

After results, the Consortium opens CLAT counselling registration on the official portal within a announced timeline. Registration typically requires paying a counselling fee, confirming your category and personal details, and indicating your intention to participate in the admission process. Missing the registration window excludes you from seat allotment, so monitor official notifications closely.

During registration, verify every detail against your CLAT application and supporting documents. Errors in name spelling, category, or date of birth can cause document verification failures later. If you spot a discrepancy between your result and application data, contact the Consortium helpdesk immediately with supporting evidence.

Registration is not the same as choice filling. You must complete registration and fee payment first within the stipulated window, then proceed to document upload and preference submission in subsequent steps. Mark all deadlines on a calendar the day results are declared so no step is missed.

Document Preparation

Counselling requires uploading scanned copies of identity proof, CLAT admit card, score card, class 10 and 12 mark sheets, category certificate if applicable, income certificate where required, and photographs. The official counselling brochure lists the exact documents and format specifications for the current year — follow it precisely rather than relying on last year's checklist.

Category certificates must be valid for the admission year and issued by competent authorities in the prescribed format. PwD candidates need disability certificates meeting specified criteria. OBC candidates typically need non-creamy layer certificates. Prepare these documents before counselling opens to avoid last-minute scrambling.

Keep both digital scans and original physical documents ready. After online allotment, reporting to the allotted NLU requires physical verification of originals. Organise a document folder now — result day is the right time to start, not the night before your reporting deadline.

Choice Filling Timeline

Choice filling is the window during which you submit your ordered NLU preference list on the counselling portal. The Consortium announces opening and closing dates for each round. You must enter all participating NLUs you wish to consider, ranked in your true order of preference from most to least desired, and lock your choices before the deadline.

Prepare your preference list on paper before logging into the portal. Research each NLU on factors including reputation, location, fees, specialisation, and placements. Include reach options above your rank, realistic targets, and safe choices below your rank. Entering choices under time pressure without prior planning is a leading cause of counselling regret.

Some counselling cycles include a mock seat allotment before the actual allotment to help candidates test their preference order against simulated outcomes. Use this feature if available. After locking choices for a round, changes may not be permitted until the next round opens, so review your order carefully before confirming.

Seat Allotment Rounds

CLAT counselling conducts seat allotment in multiple rounds. In each round, the system processes all registered candidates' locked preferences against available seats and allots the highest preference each candidate can access at their rank. Allotment results are published on the official portal showing which NLU and course, if any, you have been offered.

If you receive an allotment, you must complete the required acceptance steps within the specified deadline — typically fee payment and document verification. Failure to accept within the window may result in forfeiture of the seat for that round. If you receive no allotment, you remain in the pool for subsequent rounds as seats become available through withdrawals and upgrades.

Each round's allotment is influenced by how many candidates above you accept, withdraw, or upgrade. Closing ranks can shift between rounds. Stay engaged through all rounds rather than assuming your outcome after the first allotment, especially if you are eligible for upgrade in later rounds.

Reporting to Allotted NLU

After accepting a seat online, you must report physically to the allotted NLU within the deadline specified by the institution. Reporting involves presenting original documents for verification, completing admission formalities, and paying the admission fee and semester charges. Each NLU publishes its own reporting schedule and fee structure on its website.

Failure to report within the stipulated period without a valid approved extension results in cancellation of the allotted seat. The seat may then be released for subsequent counselling rounds. If you cannot report due to genuine reasons, contact both the Consortium and the allotted NLU immediately to understand your options.

Upon successful reporting and verification, you are admitted to the five-year BA LLB programme at that NLU. Keep copies of every receipt, admission letter, and verification acknowledgement. Your CLAT journey concludes at this point and your law school journey begins.

Upgrade & Withdrawal Options

CLAT counselling typically allows candidates who accepted a seat in an earlier round to participate in upgrade rounds. In an upgrade round, if a higher preference on your locked list becomes available within your rank, you may be moved to that seat. You do not need to re-enter preferences — the locked order from your original choice filling continues to govern upgrades.

Withdrawal options allow candidates who accepted a seat to exit the process if they choose not to continue — for example, if they decide to take a drop year or accept admission elsewhere. Withdrawal timelines and fee refund policies are specified in the official counselling brochure and vary by round. Understand refund terms before accepting any seat.

Strategic use of upgrades can improve your outcome without additional choice filling. If you accepted a mid-tier NLU in round one and your rank qualifies for a higher preference that opens in round two due to withdrawals above you, the upgrade mechanism delivers that improvement automatically. Stay registered and monitor each round until you are satisfied with your allotment or all rounds conclude.

Complete Post-Result Checklist

After CLAT results, work through this checklist systematically: download and save your score card; note your All India Rank and category rank; compare your rank against recent NLU closing ranks; register for counselling within the deadline; pay the counselling fee; upload all required documents; prepare and enter your ordered NLU preference list; lock choices before each round's deadline; check allotment results after each round; accept and report to your allotted NLU within deadlines; or participate in upgrade rounds if eligible.

Parallel tasks include informing your school or college about admission timelines, arranging finances for admission fees, and researching the allotted NLU's hostel, orientation, and academic calendar. If your rank is below your expectations, evaluate drop-year decisions carefully against alternative paths rather than deciding impulsively on result day.
